T-Mobile to Launch Its ‘Buy One Get One Free’ Offer for Galaxy Note 8 From Sep. 1

Just hours before we received info that T-Mobile will be shipping its loyal base of subscribers Galaxy Note 8 shipments earlier than other carriers, we have been updated that the carrier will also be introducing its BOGO offer for the flagship starting immediately next month. A BOGO offer stands for 'Buy One Get One Free' where you make a purchase of a single smartphone and get a second unit for absolutely no charge.

A leaked image shown below reveals what T-Mobile has planned for its customers starting September 1. The carrier aims to bring a 'Buy One Get One Free' offer for its loyal customers will which not just include a Galaxy Note 8 for free, but a Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+. To avail the offer, you will first need to purchase a Galaxy Note 8, after that you will be able to add in a second phone from the available three choices.

We're not sure why other consumers would want to choose the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ considering the Galaxy Note 8 will blow them out of the water at every given turn. It features an S-Pen accessory, has more RAM and best of all, features a dual-camera, highlighting the popular adage that 'two is better than one'.

Will you be waiting for the BOGO offer from T-Mobile? Tell us your thoughts down in the comments.

Mobile Photography / Art – Saturday Poetry ‘One Night Comes Like a Blessing’ by Grace Nichols with Mimi Svanberg

This weeks Saturday Poetry, matched with mobile photography/art is entitled 'One Night Comes Like a Blessing' by Grace Nichols. If you find sleep elusive you will enjoy this poem and indeed Grace Nichol's collection, The Insomnia Poems. Nichols is an insightful poet. Born in Georgetown, Guyana, in 1950 Nichol's grew up in a small country village on the Guyanese coast.

She moved to the city with her family when she was eight, an experience central to her first novel, Whole of a Morning Sky (1986), set in 1960s Guyana in the middle of the country's struggle for independence.

She worked as a teacher and journalist and, as part of a Diploma in Communications at the University of Guyana, spent time in some of the most remote areas of Guyana, a period that influenced her writings and initiated a strong interest in Guyanese folk tales, Amerindian myths and the South American civilisations of the Aztec and Inca. She has lived in the UK since 1977.

'One Night Comes Like a Blessing' Grace Nichols

Like a cruel lover or spiteful mistress

    No-Sleep demands my restless attentiveness.

    No-Sleep prefers me stripped –

    a dark projectionist

winding and unwinding the reel of my thoughts.

An old grained movie I can't switch off –

a starring of loves and loss, TV footage,

    soft tears, mortifications, smothered laughs.

Then, one night comes like a blessing.

A visitation of wings that sees me falling.

Whoever wants me now, I am swimming

    towards my House of Dreams.

Let no one disturb this peace.

    Let no one shake me

even from the branches of nightmares.

Come morning I am reborn again –

    a fresh-faced Eve – emerging from the rib's shadow –

ready to meet the daily pandemonium of living.

How the Galaxy Note 8’s dual camera sets new standards for mobile photography

The Galaxy Note 8 is Samsung's first flagship smartphone to feature a dual camera. There are two 12-megapixel cameras on the back with a wide-angle and telephoto lens each. The Galaxy Note 8 is also the first smartphone in the world to offer Optical Image Stabilization on both rear cameras.

The Galaxy Note 8's dual camera supports 2x optical and up to 10x digital zoom. It is capable of taking crisp and clear photos even from far distances and in low lighting conditions. Samsung has also introduced new camera modes to give users more creative control over their images.

One of the rear cameras works like any other smartphone camera. It captures color images in typical fashion. It's the second camera that adds elements which can't be captured by the primary camera.

The Galaxy Note 8's camera takes two separate images when the user takes a photo. The onboard processing engine then combines both images and produces a high-quality, clear photo with a greater depth of field.

Samsung's new flagship can easily capture clear close-up pictures. The handset's telephoto lens uses optical zoom to make the subject appear closer. It does that without enlarging any portion of the frame like digital zoom does. This results in professional-quality images even if the subject is far away.

If you've ever wanted a smartphone camera that adds the bokeh effect to your photos, look no further than the Galaxy Note 8. Typically associated with photos taken by a DSLR, the bokeh effect is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in parts of an image that are out of focus. This enables the subject to pop as the background becomes less of a distraction.

The Galaxy Note 8 has a Live Focus made that enables users to adjust the bokeh effect. They can control the intensity of the overall effect and apply it before capturing the image. The bokeh effect can also be adjusted after the picture has been taken in the Gallery.

The handset's Dual Capture mode makes the Galaxy Note 8's rear wide-angle and telephoto lenses work together to capture two separate images. Users can then find both the zoomed-in and wide-angle versions of the picture in the Gallery.

The dual camera is really what makes the Galaxy Note 8 stand out from the competition. Has it convinced you enough to spend your money on this new flagship? Let us know in the comments section below.

Cameras, flashes, zoom, lens, shutters, all paint the picture of photography but one competition paints a larger picture. It's 9Mobile Photography Competition. Formerly known as Etisalat Photography Competition, it attracts both amateur and professional photographers in Nigeria who are confident in their creative works and are willing to showcase their individual talent. 9mobile instituted this competition nine years ago as an annual competition that seeks to discover, reward and empower budding photographers to fulfill their passion and capture compelling images that celebrate Nigerian heritage.

The director, Brands and Experience, 9Mobile, Elvis Ogiemwanye, revealed that the competition underscores the company's continued commitment to talent development and the growth of Nigeria's creative industry. He encouraged interested photographers to enter for the competition by visiting the official website for the contest.

For almost a decade, 9Mobile has been at the forefront of promoting talent and creative development among the youths across different sectors such as education, art, literature, science, sports and entertainment.

"In line with our objective of business continuity, 9mobile will continue to support these creative platforms and even make them better," he said.

Meanwhile, entries close on September 11. A panel of trusted judges will then select 100 entries and this list will be out by September 22 and voting commences shortly. The picture with the highest number of votes will be announced on October 2 and unveiled as winner and voters' choice.

The jury will later select the final top three and thereafter announce the winner and two runners-up will be rewarded with prizes in October.

Smart phones have turned photography into hobby for millions of people, says Popoola Ishola

Ishola on Friday said that the advent of smart phones with quality camera features and applications (apps), has turned photography more into a hobby for millions of people worldwide rather than a profession.

He said that those who had taken photography as a hobby were beginning to give professional photographers a run for their money.

Ishola was speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) ahead of the World Photography Day usually observed on Aug.19.

He said that it was hard for photographers not to be threatened with the invention of smart phones.

"Smart phones have not only changed the way we make photos, but also the meaning and purpose of photography itself.

" Now you can take quality pictures conveniently with your smart phone.

"Millions of people have taken up photography as a creative hobby with the emergence of smart phones.

"The ability to show your images to the world through such smart phones' platforms as the Instagram, Facebook has made mobile photography an incredibly vibrant genre.

"A few years ago, I might have taken the world's greatest photo, but it would be destined to sit unseen on my hard drive and of no relevance.

"Suddenly, thanks to the social media platforms, photography has a purpose. People have started taking more appealing photos that connect them with complete strangers across the globe.

"And the different apps on smart phones have been used by their owners to release enormous creativity in people who might otherwise never have been involved with photography.

"Several mobile photos are snapshots of daily life: people simply face-booking their lives, taking photos of their birthday parties and lots more, "he said.Ishola, who is the photographer to major modelling companies, however, said that professional photographers needed not worry about the threat smart phones tend to pose to them.

"I'll survive in this profession because I have skills, "says Popoola.

"I'm a storyteller in images; my compositions are better than what is usually proposed by most people's smart phones, "he said.

"Just because you have got a sophisticated smart phone with quality camera does not make you a photo-writer.

"And just because you have got an Instagram app on your phone does not make you a great photographer."There are some techniques and tricks you learn in the school of photography that you can never have when using a mobile phone."Though, mobile phones have become a major threat to mainstream photography, I still believe that photography as a profession is up to the task of competing, "he said.

NAN also reports that another versatile photographer, Ifeanyi Oputa, had advised the association of photographers to sponsor a bill at the National Assembly on how to properly regulate and sanitise the industry in the country.

Oputa also said that professional photographers needed such an association backed by law to protect their intellectual property from illegal proliferation by pirates.

He said that since photographers do not have pension anywhere, they needed laws that would protect them and government's financial assistance to empower them.

"Photograph is a money making venture, it is only in Nigeria that people do not see the potential.

"We cannot do it alone. We need the support of government to be able to empower youth with laws guiding it to back it up,'' he said.

"We need to get what we are doing right, so that the people we are targeting will enjoy the benefits.''

He said that young people growing up had been left to fend for themselves; and in doing so they had been left to look up to people with shady characters as their role models.

"The society over time has presented gangsters and criminals as role models for our youths.

"People look down on vocational skills, but we need to correct this impression and restore them to where they really belong. So, when the youths are empowered they will make reasonable income.

"This is why we need the bill because if we are crafting the future, we need to be careful,'' Oputa said.

He added, "If there are laws in place and photographers get more organized and strong; they can raise funds to train and retrain themselves, to improve on their skills,'' he said.(NAN)

Bridging the divide between city and country through mobile photography

A photographer and drone pilot is encouraging people living in rural areas to use their mobile phones to help bridge the divide between city and country.

Fiona Lake is a professional photographer based in Townsville who delivers workshops in rural and regional parts of Australia to help empower Australians to share their stories through photography.

She said the accessibility of mobile phones was putting the power in everyday people's hands.

"We've got this amazing piece of technology and virtually everybody now has a smartphone, so everyone has the ability to tell their own story," she said.

Her body of work has a strong focus on remote cattle stations because the industry is largely under-represented in photography.

"What I try to aim for is photographs that tell a story, that will make a difference and will prompt people into thinking," Ms Lake said.

    Sharing stories from agriculture industry

With an estimated 90 per cent of all photos taken in 2016 being snapped on a smartphone, Ms Lake believes the rise of mobile technology could also help bridge the divide between Australia's city dwellers and their country cousins.

"In agriculture there are relatively few sharing their story. There's a much stronger message if there's a much greater diversity of people telling their stories," she said.

"It really helps break down stereotypes of 'Oh, there's only one type of person that lives in the bush', which is still a fairly prevalent stereotype in some areas.

"So I love challenging stereotypes and I encourage others to do likewise."

    The dangers of sharing online

Top tips for better mobile photography: 1. Experiment with HDR (high dynamic range)High dynamic range is a new setting available on most smart phones, designed to balance the exposure (the brightness of the image) in high contrast scenes. It is ideal to use in dim light (without a flash) to help balance the range of light. It is easily accessed by tapping the HDR setting to "on" within the camera app on most smart phones."So if you've got someone having smoko under a tree in the middle of the day, if you use HDR you'll get a little bit of detail in the background as well as a bit of detail on the people in the photo," Ms Lake says.2. Use focus to your advantageOn mobile phones, to focus on a subject or object, you can tap where you want to focus on the screen."Always make sure what's most important in your scene is in focus," Ms Lake advises.3. Compose your imageMs Lake recommends thinking about what message you want to send with the photo and what story it can tell, when deciding how much of a subject or scene to include." Always be mindful of what you want that photo to do, because that helps you decide the angle you take, what you include and what you crop out," she says.

But Ms Lake said with the vast sharing capabilities of the internet, there was a risk of photos of the agriculture industry put online being taken out of context and misconstrued.

"Always try to think like somebody who doesn't know anything about the topic, and make sure what you put online can't be misinterpreted or be used by someone who is looking to find fault within agriculture," she said.

Her concern was that the images may be taken intentionally by people who wished to use the photos to promote messages that were intentionally incorrect and harmful.

"If you put photos online of dead trees, there are people who will presume the landholder has killed them, when in actual fact they've been killed in a flood or been burnt or could have died due to prolonged drought," Ms Lake said.

"That attitude is quite prevalent because they've only heard one side of the story and not the other, so be really mindful of what you put online."

    Free point-and-shoot photography class offered

    Staff reports Published 2:12 p.m. PT Aug. 16, 2017

STOCK PHOTO(Photo: PHILIPPE HUGUEN, AFP/Getty Images)

The California Welcome Center at The Collection shopping center in Oxnard is teaming up with REI to offer a free photography class.

The outdoor mobile photography class will meet from 4-6 p.m. Aug. 25 at the center, 2786 Seaglass Way. It is open to 12 participants and will be led by Vinit Satyavrata, REI-inspired guide and professional photographer.

The class will include a class-style setting followed by a walk to various public art spaces within The Collection to showcase the applications of photography via point-and-shoot and smartphone cameras.

The photography class ties in with a new campaign, "Oxnard Rocks" to be launched by the Oxnard Convention & Visitors Bureau, which operates the center. The new campaign will highlight Oxnard as a hub destination city to the great outdoors.

"While Oxnard doesn't have the usual feel as a trekking town, it's definitely a central access point and short drive to amazing adventures such as the 500-plus miles of trails in the Santa Monica Mountains or a trip to the Los Padres National Forest, a major supplier of wildland recreation for southern California," said Joshua Travers, executive director of the Oxnard Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Plus Oxnard has so many attractions to visit while discovering the great outdoors, including its pristine Channel Islands Harbor, where visitors can grab a tasty burger or get the fresh catch of the day before heading home."

Participants in the photography class must be able to walk or move around at a leisurely pace and bring a smartphone that is fully charged with an extra battery or rapid charger as a backup.

In addition to the class, the center will offer a drawing to win a package provided by REI that will include a backpacking or hiking field class for two, a pair of power-lock trekking poles, a backpack and two stainless steel cups.

LG Reveals Revamped User Interface For V30: Floating Bar, Always-On Features, And Expert Mode For Photography

Google fires employee James Damore behind anti-diversity memo

LG just detailed the V30's revamped user interface called UX 6.0+, showing off key features such as a Floating Bar, new controls via the always-on display, and more. LG will unveil the device at the end of this month.  ( LG )

What do you do when your product leaks ahead of its release schedule? Well, you manage the leaks yourself, dropping piecemeal hints from time to time. That seems to be what LG is doing with its upcoming V30 flagship.

Instead of beating around the bush, waiting for a third-party source to reveal its secrets, LG has done the deed itself, showing off the V30 before any speculation meddles with the messaging. It recently announced that the phone will feature a camera with the widest aperture seen on a smartphone, and now it has followed that up by unveiling the phone's revamped software.

LG V30: Secondary Screen Replaced By Floating Bar

The V30 will run LG's UX 6.0+, the company has now confirmed. Unlike the V20, it won't come with a built-in secondary display. But that concept will see new life via the "Floating Bar" control panel, a semi-transparent bar from which users can access certain functions. It's similar to Apple's Assistive Touch feature in a way, but taking up much less space. It's hidden as a tiny arrow icon when not in use.

    LG V30: Always-On Display

Since the V30 is rumored to sport an OLED panel, it only makes sense for it to have an Always-On display. This time, LG confirms it's been retooled. Aside from showing just the clock, it now includes "Quick Tools," music controls, and even photos. An Always-On display is a nice feature to have, especially on phones with OLED panels since they offer more accurate colors — blacks appear as true blacks instead of faint gray, and other colors pop.

    (Photo : LG)

    LG V30: Face Recognition

In terms of security features, the V30 will boast a new Facial Recognition functionality that allows the user to unlock the device even when the display is turned off. There's also voice recognition, which combines the user's voice and special keywords to unlock the phone. LG says the voice recognition feature is supported by Qualcomm Aqstic voice UI technology, which means it'll always be listening, but will consume little battery power.

    LG V30: Expert Mode

The V30 will also feature what's called an "Expert Mode," which will give users expanded manual controls for all their mobile photography needs. LG will also debut a feature called "Graphy," which allows V30 users to download or share camera presets for different kinds of shots.

There have been plenty of leaks about the V30 of late. Rumors say it'll be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip, have 6 GB of RAM, offer up to 128 GB of onboard storage, and sport dual cameras. LG plans to unveil the device at an event in Berlin, Germany on Aug. 31.

HTC U11 Wants To Be Leader In Mobile Photography

Tech By Staff Reporter | August 13, 2017

The latest HTC U11 may not be the most popular Android-powered flagship this year but that is not stopping the phone from hoping to become the benchmark in the field of mobile photography.

HTC revealed earlier today that the camera hardware on the U11 is one of the finest in the market but it is still pending to live up to its full potential. This means that the photography prowess of the U11 is not at its best yet, even when the current offering is able to give rival phones a big fight.

HTC added that improvements on the camera unit will happen gradually through updates and the first of its kind is scheduled to arrive before the start of Q4 this year. HTC didn't go into details about the update but that didn't stop the reports from claiming it to be the addition of 60FPS video recording mode.

Such a feature will put U11 on par with the Samsung Galaxy S8 in terms of camera abilities and future updates may just be able to tilt the competition in HTC's favor.

    Photography 101: In the beginning

Photography classes at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts

Cathy and Pierre Dutertre don't pussyfoot around. If you take their Photography 101 class at the Florida Museum of Art, you're going to shoot manual...on the first day. You will learn what aperture, shutter speed, and ISO are. Why? Because photography is so much easier when you know what all those fancy settings on your camera do.

As a freelance photographer, I already know what these settings are and how they affect my photographs. Without this knowledge, I wouldn't be able to freeze motion, blur busy backgrounds, or take good photos at night.

Even so, there is still plenty for me to learn in this class. Between the two of them, the Dutertre's have two Master of Fine Arts degrees and 45 years experience as photographers. I am mostly self-taught, with only two years photography experience.

It is clear from the beginning that the Dutertre's care about what each and every student hopes to get out of the class, including me. The course begins with two simple questions: Why are you here and what are your expectations?

Everyone's answers are similar yet different at the same time. One woman is a nurse at Tampa General who loves photography and hopes to turn it into a business someday. Another women cites a similar joy of photography. She typically shoots automatic, but she wants to learn more about her camera's settings. A young man is here because he loves sports photography and wants to take better pictures of his 10 month old son. I'm here to tell you what this class is like and to improve my photography in the process.

All of us love photography, and all of us want to take better photographs. For most of us, this means we need to learn more about light and exposure.

In the first class we are taught how our camera sees things, and what affects the lightness and darkness of our images. We are shown bright and shiny overexposed images, and dark and mysterious underexposed images. With each advancing Powerpoint slide, students are brought closer to achieving the perfect exposure.

In the final hour, we are given time to practice what we've learned. The room is bathed in gold as the sun goes down. We peer into our LCD screens, watching the light paint peaks and valleys on our cameras' histograms, and make adjustments. Pierre and Cathy walk the room, providing assistance where needed.

In the end, everyone is shooting manual.

    That was fast.

Apple’s new Instagram account fools you into thinking the iPhone camera is special

Apple doesn't exactly endeavor much in social media, but that's been changing of late. After a false start with Twitter, now the company is launching an Instagram account (@apple). Naturally, it's meant to show off photos from the iPhone.

Apple being Apple, the account is already growing at an impressive pace. It managed to build up 40K followers in about 40 minutes, and as of writing is sitting at a cool 80K. At that pace, it will likely hit one million followers within the next couple of days.

The account appears to primarily be an extension of Apple's 'Shot on iPhone' campaign which you've probably seen in billboards and TV ads. This time, however, Apple is being a bit more interactive. Rather than simply finding photos online or hiring pro photographers, Apple is asking you to submit your own photos by tagging them with #ShotOniPhone

In other words, it's basically a way for the company to fool people into thinking there's anything particularly exceptional about the iPhone's camera. That hasn't been the case in years.

I mean, don't get me wrong; iPhone's camera is very good. The Apple revolutionized mobile photography and the iPhone 7 certainly hits the "good enough" mark for most people. But Apple the campaign is about suggesting the iPhone's photos are somehow special relative to the competition, which they're not (despite what an ex-Google VP may think).

If anything, the iPhone noticeably lags behind the Google Pixel, Galaxy S8, LG G6 and maybe other Android phones too. I've seen that in both my own use and numerous blind tests. Even the camera's fancy depth effect was pioneered by Huawei – and arguably done better too.

Point is, as always, the quality of a photo depends more on the person behind the camera.

But hey, Apple's marketing team has to make money. There's nothing wrong with the company showing off its camera tech, and the campaign is a nice way to help iPhone photographers reach a wider audience.

Just don't be fooled into thinking the iPhone's camera is all that special. Maybe the iPhone 8 will change my mind.

Ex-Google exec slams Android cameras, claims only iPhone owners care about ‘great photography’

    Samsung Galaxy S8

A former Google executive has irked Android smartphone users by claiming that those who "truly care" about photography on a mobile device should only ever buy an iPhone. In a Facebook post, former Google senior vice president of social, Vic Gundotra, ruffled a few feathers on social media by saying "if you don't mind being a few years behind, buy an Android".

In a post which started the controversial chain of statements, Gundotra commented on the "end of the DSLR" and discussed how iPhone 7's portrait mode was enough to make him leave professional photography equipment at home. "Great job Apple," he concluded.

However, in response to one comment suggesting that Samsung's Galaxy S8 has a superior camera module (and an ensuing back and forth between several users), Gundotra didn't hold back.

In a follow-up post an hour later (on 30 July), the former Google exec panned Android camera software and the fragmentation of the OS across phones from multiple manufacturers.

"Here is the problem: It's Android," he said "Android is an open source (mostly) operating system that has to be neutral to all parties. This sounds good until you get into the details. Ever wonder why a Samsung phone has a confused and bewildering array of photo options? Should I use the Samsung Camera? Or the Android Camera? Samsung gallery or Google Photos?

"It's because when Samsung innovates with the underlying hardware (like a better camera) they have to convince Google to allow that innovation to be surfaced to other applications via the appropriate API. That can take YEARS.

"Also the greatest innovation isn't even happening at the hardware level – it's happening at the computational photography level. (Google was crushing this 5 years ago – they had "auto awesome" that used AI techniques to automatically remove wrinkles, whiten teeth, add vignetting, etc… but recently Google has fallen back).

Despite several comments addressing the glowing critical response for the camera units on Android smartphones such as the aforementioned Galaxy S8, the HTC U11, and Google's own Pixel devices, Gundotra was not to be swayed, ending with the following:

"Apple doesn't have all these constraints. They innovate in the underlying hardware, and just simply update the software with their latest innovations (like portrait mode) and ship it.

"Bottom line: If you truly care about great photography, you own an iPhone. If you don't mind being a few years behind, buy an Android."

    Ouch.

Best smartphone apps to help accelerate learning of photography and image manipulation techniques

    By Abhilash Pavuluri

If you've been reading our weekly photography series up till now, you'll see that we've mostly concentrated on people who are buying and using a DSLR for the first time. But that doesn't mean we've left mobile photography users in the lurch. As the market of smartphone cameras continues to ever improve, we think that there's a lot that can be done with smartphone cameras, provided you have the right tools for it.

    Adobe Lightroom

    Adobe Lightroom

While most stock photography apps in your phone are usually limited in functionality, a lot of third party apps that give you access to a lot more features do exist. Let's have a look at a few in this article.

VSCO Cam:VSCO Cam is among the most popular filter-based camera apps out there. While it doesn't give you much control over the actual photo, the real power of VSCO lies in its editor. You're given access to not just a pretty handy filter pack but also adjustments like contrast, saturation and the like. You do get some basic controls like a histogram, grid for compostion, and exposure sliders. One cool feature that you will realise the use of only after extended use is the option of batch photo editing. This is particularly useful when editing stacked images, etc.

VSCO has an extensive online community, and some extra features like more filters and controls can be unlocked for a price. It's also quite intuitive to use and works on most popular mobile platforms.

We will say that it offers most of what Instagram offers, apart from the social networking aspect. So try VSCO out if you need a simple editor app today.

Open Camera:Open Camera is a much more versatile, powerful manual camera app that does a lot more than VSCO. It's loaded to the gills with features: the ability to control shutter speed, ISO, exposure, white balance, for instance, really should suffice for a novice photographer. But that isn't all: you can also use the built in intervalometer to take images at intervals and stitch a timelapse from them, trigger the camera to take a photo via a noise(like clapping or whistling), record a HD video, and so many more. Open Camera opens up a new world of possibilities.

Another cool feature that has to be a first: Open Camera has the option to auto stabilise the phone while a photo is being taken. While we're sure it's not magic, and merely software, it's still a nice feature to have, especially if your phonr doesn't have OIS.

Open Camera is among the most feature packed apps we've listed, but do be warned that there's a learning curve to it.

Lightroom:Another editor, and probably the most famous batch processor on desktops, Lightroom made its way to mobile phones recently, and there are enough reasons to recommend it. The biggest reason? It's free! That's right, in contrast to the huge price tag for the desktop version, Lightroom for mobile is completely free. But what else can you do with it?

For one thing, HDR. Lightroom has always been known to be popular in the HDR department, for the sheer number of presets available. The mobile variant is no different, although you only have 5 presets at first.

The other most interesting feature is the ability to capture photos in RAW using Adobe's own in-app camera(DNG format). This is a feature that's actually essential if you want to become good at post processing. Lastly, Lightroom lets you organise your sets across multiple devices(provided they all have Lightroom), which makes it really good for batch processing.

Google Photos:We're not being paid to say this: Google Photos is a great way to store, organise and retrieve your photos. While that's all it can do, it does so perfectly. Considering it has free unlimited storage to your Google account, snapping away at your phone should finally be something you can do without worry.

What the app can also do is let you get creative with your photo sets, and make movies, animations or even GIFs from them. You can also turn them into a creative album and get it printed if you wish to, and Google will automatically turn a good photo set into an album if it thinks the photos are related enough.

    iPhone 7 Plus Camera Review

Less than a year ago, Apple introduced the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus phones to the market. The iPhone 7 Plus was the first Apple phone to have a dual lens design (28mm wide-angle and 56mm telephoto equivalent), so Apple put quite a bit of emphasis on photography with this model. Although I was quite happy with my iPhone 6 Plus at the time of the announcement, I decided to upgrade to the latest version, primarily because of these camera features the phone offered. Since then, I have captured thousands of images in different environments, which not only allowed me to get a deeper understanding of the camera capabilities of the phone, but also understand its many issues and limitations. In this review, I will be going over my experience with the iPhone 7 Plus camera and discuss its pros and cons.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

    1) iPhone 7 Plus Cameras

First of all, it is important to point out that the iPhone 7 Plus actually has two cameras with two lenses. While both cameras have the same 12 MP resolution sensors, there is actually a difference in sensor size and maximum aperture between the two. The first wide-angle camera has a 1/3″ sensor with a 28mm equivalent f/1.8 lens (a total of 6 lens elements), whereas the second telephoto camera has a smaller 1/3.6″ sensor with a 56mm equivalent f/2.8 lens (a total of 5 lens elements). This in itself reveals that the cameras are made for different purposes and it highlights the disadvantage of the telephoto lens compared to the wide-angle lens. Not only does the telephoto camera have a smaller sensor, but it also has a lens that is over a stop slower in comparison, making it only practical to use in bright daylight conditions.

    iPhone 7 Plus Dual Camera

    iPhone 7 Plus Dual Camera

Still, despite these shortcomings, the telephoto camera on the iPhone 7 Plus certainly has its uses. First, thanks to its reach, it can actually be a great tool for close-up shots of people. In this case, instead of using digital zoom to get closer to a subject (which would result in huge resolution loss), one can simply switch from wide to telephoto and get tighter framing without compromising on resolution. The added benefit of using the telephoto lens to photograph people, is that one can use a special "Portrait" mode, where the camera uses a combination of software and the zoom lens to emulate shallow depth of field, which Apple dubbed as "Depth Effect":

    iPhone 7 Plus + iPhone 7 Plus back iSight Duo camera 6.6mm f/2.8 @ 6.6mm, ISO 32, 1/120, f/2.8

Second, aside from portraiture, the telephoto lens also opens up opportunities to get tighter framing when shooting landscapes, architecture or even macro. The nice thing about the telephoto lens, is that one can combine its reach with the panorama mode to stitch high resolution panoramas:

iPhone 7 Plus Image Sample (13)

iPhone 7 Plus Image Sample (13)

    iPhone 7 Plus + iPhone 7 Plus back camera 6.6mm f/2.8 @ 6.6mm, ISO 64, 1/1000, f/2.8

However, there are certainly disadvantages worth keeping in mind, so let's discuss those in more detail.

iPhone 7 Plus Image Sample (5)

iPhone 7 Plus Image Sample (5)

    iPhone 7 Plus + iPhone 7 Plus back camera 3.99mm f/1.8 @ 3.99mm, ISO 50, 1/30, f/1.8 2) Portrait Mode with Depth Effect Issues

Apple's engineers did a great job coming up with a solution that can simulate shallow depth of field that can only be achieved with larger cameras and lenses. For the first time in cell phone history, we heard such words as bokeh being mentioned as part of an announcement, which certainly triggered some bold claims and even concerns from some photographers about cell phone cameras challenging DSLR and mirrorless cameras in terms of being able to "emulate" particular looks that were only possible to achieve with expensive camera equipment before. While I personally do enjoy using the "Portrait" mode with "Depth Effect" to photograph people and it does a pretty decent job in most situations, software emulation certainly has its issues. First, the software emulation algorithm is not smart enough to differentiate some foreground elements from background elements. For example, if the subject you photograph has a hat or some other head wear that is not part of the algorith m, the blurring might affect areas of the photo that should not be affected. In addition, it might not be able to properly isolate the subject from the immediate background, as can be seen from the sample image below:

Look at the immediate area to the left of the subject's face, where part of the wall has not been properly blurred. Strange artifacts can often be seen in transitional areas as well.

Lastly, the algorithm is clearly optimized for photographing people and not other subjects such as pets. Take a look at the below before and after photograph of my cat and see what this mode did to the cat's whiskers on the right side of the frame:

Also, pay attention to the area around the ears of the cat, where the transition is pretty rough.

Hence, depending on the subject you are photographing, the portrait mode can certainly show its weaknesses. The good news is that the phone saves two images by default – one with and without the software emulation depth effect, so if a portrait does not turn out good, at least you have the non-emulated version to fallback to.

    3) Panorama Stitching Issues

Similar to the previous generation iPhone devices, the iPhone 7 Plus either has a problem with properly locking its exposure when stitching panoramas, or has some odd stitching algorithm that can mess up panoramas pretty badly, resulting in very uneven skies. While this is not a big deal in some situations, it certainly shows its weaknesses when shooting in low light conditions. Take a look at the below panorama that was shot at sunrise:

iPhone 7 Plus Panorama Stitching Problem #1

iPhone 7 Plus Panorama Stitching Problem #1

    iPhone 7 Plus + iPhone 7 Plus back camera 6.6mm f/2.8 @ 6.6mm, ISO 80, 1/310, f/2.8

See what the camera did to the top of the frame in the clouds? There are vertical lines all over, making this panorama unusable. I have encountered a number of situations where I thought that the panorama looked good, until I zoomed in and looked at the details of the sky.

At the same time, I found out that the iPhone panorama algorithm can actually be usable for vertical panoramas, something I previously never tried before. Take a look at the below image of a church that I shot at night:

    iPhone 7 Plus Vertical Panorama

    iPhone 7 Plus Vertical Panorama

    iPhone 7 Plus + iPhone 7 Plus back camera 3.99mm f/1.8 @ 3.99mm, ISO 640, 1/120, f/1.8

There was no way for me to be able to fit the whole church in one frame, so I tried a vertical panorama and it did a pretty decent job to my surprise.

    4) Ghosting and Flare

What about ghosting and flare? Well, camera phones always have a hard time dealing with bright subjects and the iPhone 7 Plus is not an exception. Take a look at the below photo that I captured with the sun right above the frame:

iPhone 7 Plus Ghosting and Flare

iPhone 7 Plus Ghosting and Flare

    iPhone 7 Plus + iPhone 7 Plus back camera 3.99mm f/1.8 @ 3.99mm, ISO 20, 1/1150, f/1.8

And that's a good case – sometimes severe ghosting and flare can ruin the whole image, especially if the lens is not very clean. When shooting at night, you might encounter strange ghosting and flare artifacts as seen below:

iPhone 7 Plus Ghosting and Flare Night Lights

iPhone 7 Plus Ghosting and Flare Night Lights

    iPhone 7 Plus + iPhone 7 Plus back camera 3.99mm f/1.8 @ 3.99mm, ISO 160, 1/30, f/1.8

This behavior can change depending on the angle, so if you see outlines as in the above image, it might be a good idea to change the framing slightly to reduce the effect.

    5) Autofocus Performance

The iPhone 7 Plus is obviously not going to give you DSLR or mirrorless-level AF performance, so nobody expects to see a speed demon. The camera certainly does a good job with maintaining pretty solid and reliable AF performance, which is good enough in most situations. Keep in mind that a tiny 1/3″ sensor along with an f/1.8 aperture translate to a boatload of depth of field, so focusing is not comparable in many ways to what one would experience on a large sensor camera. Still, it is fast and responsive enough for a smartphone and that's all that matters. You simply tap with your finger on the area you want to focus on and the camera does its job. When the phone detects faces, face recognition algorithms kick in and the camera automatically focuses and tracks your subjects, putting the camera on face priority mode, which is nice. Would I use the iPhone 7 Plus to photograph fast action? Probably not. But for everyday subjects, it does the job reasonably well.

    iPhone 7 Plus + iPhone 7 Plus back iSight Duo camera 6.6mm f/2.8 @ 6.6mm, ISO 20, 1/230, f/2.8 6) Details and Noise

Thanks to a small sensor and tiny pixels, it is expected that the camera produces plenty of noise in low-light situations. This is not an issue if you are showcasing small to medium size images to your friends on social media, but if you are trying to do something more serious, you are not going to have a lot of options. The good news is, if you shoot in good daylight conditions, the camera is capable of producing plenty of detail with little noise in images:

    iPhone 7 Plus + iPhone 7 Plus back iSight Duo camera 6.6mm f/2.8 @ 6.6mm, ISO 20, 1/210, f/2.8

The bad news is, if you shoot in low light conditions and ISO needs to be pushed above ISO 100, you will be dealing with tons of noise that might make the image completely unusable:

iPhone 7 Plus ISO 320 Noise

iPhone 7 Plus ISO 320 Noise

    iPhone 7 Plus + iPhone 7 Plus back camera 6.6mm f/2.8 @ 6.6mm, ISO 320, 1/60, f/2.8

As you can see, the above image has way too much noise at ISO 320, which makes the image look bad, even at down-sampled web resolution. Keep this in mind when shooting in low light conditions.

    7) HDR Mode

Just like the previous generation iPhones, the iPhone 7 Plus is also equipped with the "High Dynamic Range" (HDR) feature, which does a decent job at recovering highlights and shadows when dealing with more difficult lighting situations, as can be seen below:

While the camera certainly does a good job at preserving highlights, I am not a big fan of the way the images come out by default to be honest. I am not sure if Apple changed anything in the HDR algorithm on the iPhone 7 / iPhone 7 Plus, but when comparing a standard image to its HDR version, the latter typically comes out more flat, dull and washed out. In many cases, I still found HDR to be beneficial to use simply to preserve highlight details and if a photo was too important for me, I would probably end up blending two images together in Photoshop, rather than trying to tweak the HDR version.

iPhone 7 Plus Image Sample (6)

iPhone 7 Plus Image Sample (6)

    iPhone 7 Plus + iPhone 7 Plus back camera 6.6mm f/2.8 @ 6.6mm, ISO 64, 1/60, f/2.8 8) RAW / DNG Format

When the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus came out, I got excited when I heard about the capability to shoot RAW / DNG images. However, I quickly found out that this capability was not natively built into the iOS and one has to rely on a third party app to be able to shoot DNG images. While I do have Lightroom mobile installed on my phone and I have tried taking a number of DNG images using this app, the fact that it is a third party app that makes it difficult to quickly access all the photographs from other apps made me abandon it after a short while. It was especially annoying when I tried to launch Lightroom mobile in the middle of nowhere with no cell phone reception, and the app wanted me to sign in to my Adobe account to proceed. While there might be other great third party options to shoot in DNG format, unless Apple provides this functionality natively like other phone manufacturers do, with the capability to make quick DNG to JPEG conversions in the camera app, I really don' t see myself shooting in DNG. For me, it is often easier and simpler to just shoot in JPEG without any hassles…

    iPhone 7 Plus + iPhone 7 Plus back iSight Duo camera 3.99mm f/1.8 @ 3.99mm, ISO 20, 1/1800, f/1.8 9) Summary

It is certainly great to see all the innovation mobile phone manufacturers are putting into each new generation device. With Apple and other manufacturers now adding multiple cameras to their phones, even more photo capabilities are being pushed to appeal the masses. The idea is to show that camera phones can be good enough for everyday needs, and this marketing strategy has certainly been working – the point-and-shoot market is pretty much decimated by now. Year after year, we are experiencing improved image quality and overall performance of camera phones, which is certainly exciting to witness for many of us. Mobile photography has exploded in the past few years, with hundreds of millions of people taking pictures and uploading them to social media platforms such as Instagram. And without a doubt, Apple has played a huge role in pushing others to innovate in this area – there are some manufacturers out there today who are now specifically targeting photography enthusiasts w ith larger camera sensors, external attachments and multiple lenses.

The iPhone 7 Plus continues to push innovation and provide specific features that appeal photographers. Apple engineers certainly did a good job with the simulated portrait mode that gives subjects a "depth effect", something we have never seen on camera phones before. However, it is clear that such new technology certainly has its drawbacks and limitations. Although some want us to believe that we no longer need our large cameras to take pictures and phone cameras can do as good of a job, we know that such claims will never be true – and the size of the sensor has a lot to do with it. Still, for those situations when we don't have cameras handy, camera phones offer pretty good image quality – far better than what we had to deal with in the past.

Overall, despite all the shortcomings pointed out in this review, the iPhone 7 Plus does a decent job for my needs. While there are other great camera phone choices out there, the iPhone 7 Plus serves me well when I need to take occasional shots, especially in bright daylight conditions.
