Snapseed gets RAW photo editing

Snapseed is definitely our favourite mobile photography editor, with a plethora of features hidden behind an interface that never feels overwhelming. And now its getting even better.

The 2.1 update to the Snapseed app on Android brings the ability to process RAW images right on your handset. RAW images are shots taken in a totally uncompressed format, like what you might get out of a DSLR camera. This gives you more latitude to tweak the values after you've taken the picture, regaining details that might be lost when it's compressed down to a basic jpg format.

After the update you'll be able to open DNG files and play with them to your heart's content, right on your smartphone screen. Now bear in mind the demands of tweaking a huge photo might cause some slowdown, depending on your handset.

As for how you get those photos in the first place, that's a bit tougher. You can of course email an image from your fancy point and shoot or DSLR, though you'll have to convert them if you're shooting on Canon or Nikon as they use their own file format. On the other hand, some smartphones from HTC and OnePlus do natively shoot RAW images and you can just load them up for editing.

One thing to note is that RAW images take up a lot more space than jpgs. We're talking 10 or 20 times as much space for each and every photo, and that doesn't include saving and working on multiple iterations of new files. If you're planning on going the RAW root, be sure you've got the storage to handle it.

The latest update for Snapseed on Android is available here now.
