BHUBANESWAR: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has decided to launch a mobile photo exhibition of late Biju Patnaik as part of his birth centenary celebrations to counter the aggressive campaign by Congress and BJP ahead of the panchayat polls next year.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, while addressing the public meeting for the birth centenary here on Saturday, announced that this will be celebrated in every village in the State. The announcement by the Chief Minister has come in for sharp criticism from the opposition political parties that have described it as a move to garner votes during panchayat polls.
Convenor of Biju Patnaik birth centenary celebration committee and former minister Surya Narayan Patro said the panel will meet again in next couple of days to finalise the schedule for the year.
Besides the proposal for a mobile photo-exhibition on Biju Patnaik, the committee has also decided to make afilm on his life and achievements. Patro said both the proposals will have to be approved by the Chief Minister.
A draft proposal for the year-long celebrations has been submitted to the Chief Minister. Preparations will be started for the celebrations after it is approved by the CM, he said.
Meanwhile, celebration of Panchayati Raj Day at Bhubaneswar only to mark Biju Patnaik's birth anniversary has come in for criticism from several senior leaders. They alleged that the Panchayati Raj Day could not be celebrated in all 6234 panchayats and 314 block headquarters as representatives were called for the conference at Bhubaneswar. In earlier years, Panchayati Raj Day was observed at every panchayat and block headquarters on March 5.
The BJD, however, maintained that the meeting of centenary celebration committee will be convened around March 15 to decide how to celebrate the anniversary at the panchayat and block level throughout the year.
