Snapseed gets RAW photo editing

Snapseed is definitely our favourite mobile photography editor, with a plethora of features hidden behind an interface that never feels overwhelming. And now its getting even better.

The 2.1 update to the Snapseed app on Android brings the ability to process RAW images right on your handset. RAW images are shots taken in a totally uncompressed format, like what you might get out of a DSLR camera. This gives you more latitude to tweak the values after you've taken the picture, regaining details that might be lost when it's compressed down to a basic jpg format.

After the update you'll be able to open DNG files and play with them to your heart's content, right on your smartphone screen. Now bear in mind the demands of tweaking a huge photo might cause some slowdown, depending on your handset.

As for how you get those photos in the first place, that's a bit tougher. You can of course email an image from your fancy point and shoot or DSLR, though you'll have to convert them if you're shooting on Canon or Nikon as they use their own file format. On the other hand, some smartphones from HTC and OnePlus do natively shoot RAW images and you can just load them up for editing.

One thing to note is that RAW images take up a lot more space than jpgs. We're talking 10 or 20 times as much space for each and every photo, and that doesn't include saving and working on multiple iterations of new files. If you're planning on going the RAW root, be sure you've got the storage to handle it.

The latest update for Snapseed on Android is available here now.

Getting snappy with the Z5 Compact

Article By: Hadlee Simons Fri, 30 Oct 2015 12:06 PM The Sony Z5 range in South Africa. The Sony Z5 range in South Africa.

We received our Z5 Compact review unit several days, wasting little time in putting the camera through its paces.

The Z5 Compact is equipped with the same 23-megapixel camera as its Z5 and Z5 Premium stablemates, as well as the same 5MP front-facing shooter.

So what's the mobile photography experience like with Sony's latest handset then? Well, so far so good, bar a few weird bugs at this point (such as the phone going to the lockscreen when changing camera modes).

Weirdly enough, I also found that YouTube doesn't seem to support the new H265 video codec for uploads. But at least Sony gives you the option to use the legacy H264 codec when recording in 4K.

Alcatel Flash eyes manufacturing in India

Alcatel Flash, a brand of Hong Kong-based TCL Communication, on Tuesday said it is evaluating manufacturing in India to bolster its presence in the domestic market.

The company, which on Tuesday launched its latest handset 'Flash 2', priced at Rs. 9,299 with e-commerce firm Flipkart, sees India as its top market in the South East Asia region. "India is a strategic market for us. It is the top market in the South East Asia region… We are evaluating whether we should manufacture here," Alcatel Flash General Manager Albert Wong told PTI.

He added that though no firm plans have been drawn, the company will most likely partner with a third party to manufacture in India. In the last few month, a bunch of handset makers like Xiaomi, Motorola, and Gionee have started manufacturing operations in India in partnership with electronics major Foxconn.

Being one of the fastest growing smartphone markets globally, India is poised to overtake the US as the second-largest market in the next few years.

Shipments in India grew 44 percent to 26.5 million units in April-June, as per research firm IDC. Talking about the new product, Wong said Alcatel Flash 2 has a strong focus on mobile photography.

"We are working on building a community of enthusiasts rather than just selling phones here. We want to be more focused on the mobile photography feature… We will launch two devices next year," he said.

Praveen Valecha, Regional Director at Alcatel Asia Pacific Business Unit India, said the company already has a team working across social networking and digital marketing in tandem with headquarters.

Drivers beware: mobile photo radar gets rolling

Drivers beware: 17 new moveable photo-radar systems are ready to nab speeders starting today on Montreal's south shore, as well as in Quebec City and Gatineau.

The new mobile radar trucks can be shifted from place to place, which should make it difficult for drivers to predict their location.

Another 19 stationary models will be installed throughout the province within a month, all equipped to automatically detect scofflaws who drive too fast or barrel through red lights.

The 36 new units will be shifted around 129 locations across the province, including a pair that will be moved about in six locations on the South Shore.

Many machines will be controlled by SQ provincial police, while some others will be managed by municipal police forces in Longueuil, Laval, Gatineau and Quebec City as part of an 18-month pilot project.

The decision to install more of the devices comes as a response to complaints of excessive speeding, according to Transport Quebec representative Guillaume Paradis.

"In Quebec City, it was decided to increase the total to get people to try to slow down. We were looking to install them at places where people were complaining of speeding on their streets," he said.

Provincial Transport Minister Robert Poëti has said that speeding has decreased by 59 per cent in areas where photo radar has been installed, while the devices have reduced the number of people driving through red lights by 80 per cent.

HyperCam from University of Washington will help you to see through

The ability to see through things is till date the ability that a lot of individuals had wished for. It seems that the University of Washington has come up with the solution. HyperCam is a special type of camera that can see through things using a special kind of imaging technique.hypercam

The hyperspectral imaging technique, which is a part of HyperCam is already is large scale use. The technique is used in satellite imagery and the energy monitoring systems. The other good feature of HyperCam is that it is quite affordable. Unlike the other hyperspectral image capturing systems, HyperCam will not cost you thousands of dollars.

The main goal of the makers is to make hyperspectral imaging available for the mobile devices, which can take the world of mobile photography by a swirl. According to the statement given by the University of Washington's team, the whole hardware for them has cost around $800. They believe that with the implementation of the hyperspectral imaging on the mobile devices, the costs can be cut down to $50.

HyperCam records the images with infrared waves, where in the area is illuminated by 17 different wavelengths. The 17 wavelengths use fall in the category of both visible and near infrared parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.

"Existing systems are costly and hard to use, so we decided to create an inexpensive hyperspectral camera and explore these uses ourselves," said Neel Joshi, a Microsoft researcher who worked on the project. "After building the camera we just started pointing it at everyday objects — really anything we could find in our homes and offices — and we were amazed at all the hidden information it revealed."

A camera normally used by individuals, breaks down light into three simple color bands- Red, Blue and Green, but it cannot actually differentiate between the various different variations of Red like Crimson Read or Light Red. HyperCam can do these things at ease, which makes it the special one.

InfoTrends Study Explores How Today’s Camera Phones are Impacting Digital Photography

InfoTrends report 2015 U.S. Mobile Imaging End User Study, based on a survey of over 1,300 mobile phone owners between the ages of 13 and 79, highlights the demographics of camera phone users and non-users, discusses influential camera phone features and factors, and highlights respondents' mobile photo and video behaviors.

Weymouth, MA (PRWEB) October 15, 2015

Camera phones undoubtedly are fully-mainstream devices today and InfoTrends' research shows they are owned by 92% of U.S. consumers. Smartphone camera specifications and features have improved so much through the years that they have become the preferred device for overall and everyday photography.

The report also explores how today's camera phones are affecting digital photography. Mobile phone manufacturers, app developers, and service providers can leverage the insights in this report to understand the wants and needs for current and future mobile photography products and services.

When camera phone users were asked which three features were most influential in the choice of their current phone, the most popular motivators were brand, operating system, and size of the handset. Brand of phone was the most influential feature and staying with the same wireless carrier was the most important factor outside of features when choosing a phone, suggesting that phone owners are displaying some degree of brand loyalty and prefer to stick with something familiar if their experience has been a good one. Having a camera was a little less influential than it had been in years past, but the photography aspect is still one of the most used features on a phone.

Most of today's smartphones offer 8+ megapixel resolution and are capable of capturing photos that are considered "good enough" for most people. InfoTrends recommends that handset manufacturers focus on other aspects of the camera experience, including low-light capture, optical zoom, and improved flash. As mobile videography gets more popular, advanced video capabilities, like easy editing videos and 4K capture, will take mobile video to the next level.

Sony Xperia Z5 bests iPhone 6S in new test for smartphone photography crown

Has Android finally eclipsed the iPhone as the device of choice for photography nerds? That's what a new test of the iPhone 6S camera seems to suggest.

Image quality specialists DXO Mark carried out the detailed test examining the 6S's exposure, contrast, autofocus, texture, noise, artifacts and flash it gave the phone an "82" rating.

While this is still very good, it was beaten on the same metrics by recent iterations of its many Android competitors including the Moto X Style, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and LG G4. Google's newest Nexus 6P scored an 84, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge scored 86 - with the top grade of 87 going to the Sony Xperia Z5.

The iPhone 6S camera was talked up by Apple for the inclusion of a number of new technologies to create better images, as well as for boosting up the megapixel count to 12 on the rear camera. It can also now record video in 4K instead of just Full HD.

The Z5 meanwhile sports a massive 23MP camera and Sony is very proud of its "hybrid autofocus" technology, which enables the camera to focus in just 0.03 seconds.

This said, the difference in scores isn't huge and the iPhone 6S camera is far from terrible. What is significant is just how competitive the latest batch of Android devices are on this metric.

Since the beginning, the iPhone has always been positioned as a premium product and Apple has fought hard to maintain its top position - but could customers looking for the best possible camera soon find themselves look elsewhere instead?

Award-winning photographers using smartphones to capture the world

    By Benita Fernando |Posted 11-Oct-2015

Cellphone photography is slowly converting cynical shutterbugs and gallery owners, but how long before it demands the price of art?

At the upcoming Delhi Photo Festival (DPF) scheduled for the end this month, a Kolkata-based award-winning photographer's works will be projected as part of evening screenings. The series, grimly titled, The End, is a culmination of three wintery months that Ronny Sen spent in Jharia, famous for its collieries and infamous for its political landmines.

Cell phoneTravellers on the Rajdhani Express, by Chirodeep Chaudhuri, shot on a Nokia Lumia 1020. Chaudhuri hopped onboard the cellphone camera bandwagon a little more than a year ago

There is a fire, both literal and metaphorical, blazing away in the coalmines, and on its streets and homes overhead. Sen describes The End, shot entirely on an iPhone 5, as "a post-apocalyptic vision where everything has been extracted".

Ronny Sen shot this photograph, of coalminers' children waiting for their parents to return at Jharia, on an iPhone 5Ronny Sen shot this photograph, of coalminers' children waiting for their parents to return at Jharia, on an iPhone 5

Twenty grainy images from the ash-ridden town, in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand, will be shown at DPF; 300 were exhibited at The Gujral Foundation earlier this year.

But Sen, 28, doesn't wish to be slotted as an "iphoneographer".

"There is nothing called cellphone photography. All a photographer needs is an image-capturing device." It's a term, he thinks, used mostly by amateurs who share their 'Mobile Photography Album' on social media, and by cellphone firms. While the cellphone camera is the most democratic tool and part of one of the most democratic of the arts, the term cellphone photography is a cause for restlessness. It's liberating, for anyone can shoot and tweak photos on a mobile. And that is, ironically, also the problem. Cellphone photography is often seen as less 'serious', more 'common'.

Can it be good enough to be considered 'art'?

Chirodeep Chaudhuri had stayed away from smartphones and "the whole cellphone photo bandwagon" until students he mentors at various colleges convinced him that it was time he hopped on. For the last year-and-a-half, he has been actively shooting the streets of India and his pet cat on his Nokia Lumia 1020. Practising photography for the last 21 years and calling himself a "compulsive printer", he also routinely carries out test-prints of his mobile shots. "Cellphone photography has gone from being a tool of rebellion to gaining legitimacy," he says. But this championing of the gadget — handy and accessible — is new, adds Chaudhuri. "Five years back, the same community of photographers was putting down the cellphone. This complete turn-around is interesting, especially for us photographers who are a notoriously unhappy lot," he smiles.

Veteran photographer Raghu Rai has been experimenting with his Gionee Elife E7 but thinks cellphones cannot be the future of photography, unless they come with improvised lenses

One of the world's most expensive photo is Rhein II, a manipulated digital photograph made by German visual artist Andreas Gursky in 1999. It sold at a Christie's auction for 4.3 million dollars. But in the hardly subtle hierarchy of the arts, the cellphone photograph could be suspected of occupying the lowliest rung. Photographers like Sen will argue that cellphone cameras can contribute to a new visual language, just as every other high-end professional camera might. "The anxiety with cellphone photography is similar to the one experienced when digital photography threatened to phase out analog," says Shilpa Vijaykrishnan, research associate at Bengaluru's Tasveer Gallery. "The image itself, rather than how it gets made, is more important. The reservations in the art market lie with replication; since you can make n-number of prints, collecting or selling them becomes a problem. You start feeling: Why should I pay for something that I can make on my own?" she argue s.

    Shilpa VijaykrishnanShilpa Vijaykrishnan

UK auction house Christie's online sale of photographs, called First Exposure, wrapped up on October 1, with the highest bid for a work by Candida Höfer. The sale saw analogue, digital and mixed media photographic works; Christie's doesn't sell mobile phone photographs at its auctions. A spokesperson stated, "Photo-graphs coming up for sale at Christie's have a traced history and provenance, which is part of their value. Further, to establish an estimate, the condition of the photograph, its edition number and therewith rarity and how the work of art in question has been preserved over the years count enormously."

    Chirodeep ChaudhuriChirodeep Chaudhuri

Does the virile replicating phone-photograph stand any chance then?

Mumbai-based photographer Natasha Hemrajani offers a solution. In 2013, she showcased 12 prints at the DPF as part of her series, Hello Goodbye. The series was a nostalgic look at the city, where Hemrajani grew up, gradually transforming from being Bombay to Mumbai. Shooting fleeting glimpses of the changing landscape from a taxi window and experimenting with multiple exposures, she found her iPhone 5s as a trusted tool. Ten prints were sold to a gallery at R20,000 each. Too much for a phone photograph? "Well, a genre-lised tool shouldn't matter. Cellphone photography doesn't need help; it is very much in the art space. And it's not endlessly repeatable as is often thought."

The works she sold at DPF 2013 were a limited edition of five prints each. She further hypothesizes that a fifth run of limited edition prints may well sell for Rs 75,000.

Times have changed. The amateurs want the "big" cameras; the masters are experimenting with miniature ones. Veteran photographer Raghu Rai, whose chilling photographs of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy are now historic, shot on a Gionee Elife E7 for 21 days in August this year. Previously slugging a professional camera everywhere he went, he found smartphones to have as accurate a pixel quality as a DSLR. "But cellphones cannot be the future of photography, unless they have improvised lenses. They are, at best, teasers. People shoot on a cellphone and then think, 'Wow, that's a good shot. I must try my hands on a professional camera.'"

The greatest misconception surrounding this new wave of digital photography, says Prashant Panjiar, co-founder of DPF, is the misconception that high-end professional cameras are meant for earth-shattering photographs and cellphones for social media. "When photographers want to document how Nepal is rising from its rubble post the earthquake, they use DSLRs. But when they need to meet friends for a drink, they think a mobile will do."

Hemrajani optimistically says, "The Mumbai art scene is fresh, young and welcoming of digital photography." But Mumbai is yet to see a cellphone photography show, be it journalistic or fine art. Consider Cellphones in Summer, a 2012 exhibition at [Artspace] at Untitled, in Oklahoma City, USA. It blurred the lines between professional and non-professional image-makers by showing 38 phone-photos, with summer as the theme. Last year, fine art photographer Gerry Coe, exhibited Phone Art in Northern Ireland. He left behind Photoshop to use a range of phone apps to create high-end fine art visuals.

With disappearing dark rooms, Chaudhuri considers a whole generation of photographers who do not know how to shoot on film. A camera does not make a photographer. Rather, the reverse is true, he says.

Christie's signs off, with, "We do not have a crystal ball to know the future but it is a phenomena to watch, as is street art. The established photographers and icons of photography will always lead the market."

The only iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus camera review you need to see

There are plenty of iPhone 6s reviews that people might be interested in, including complete reviews of the new device and camera reviews that focus solely on photography and videos. Reviewers have already praised Apple's newest iPhone in their in-depth reviews, so now it's time to look at what pro photographers have to say about the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

MUST SEE: Watch this iPhone case heal itself from scratches in 20 seconds

Several camera comparisons have already shown the improved iPhone 6s cameras in action, with the phone found capable of beating top rivals, including DSLR cameras, in performance tests. A pro photographer who last year came out with a thorough iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus camera review has now completed his in-depth testing of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus' photo and video features, finding that the devices even better than their predecessors.

Austin Mann shot 2121 photos, 55 panoramas, 237 time-lapses and 1310 videos including Live Photos to assess the camera features of the new iPhones and explain what's new compared to last year's iPhone 6 models.

    austin-man-iphone-6s-camera-review-2

Mann stressed the fact that he and his friend only used iPhones and tripod/mounts to shoot videos and pictures, without relying on any pro cameras for the job – "mobile photography's unique advantage is, well, mobility, so we fight hard to maintain it," he said.

The photographer looked at resolution increases for both cameras, optical image stabilization (OIS) for video and time-lapse recordings (only available on iPhone 6s Plus), Live Photos functionality, low light performance, and selfie camera performance.

The OIS is seen as a "game changer," or "hands down the most significant improvement in the iPhone 6s Plus camera upgrade."

As for Live Photos, Mann said that it'll let photographers enrich stories and capture life even better using this photo and video combination. "See with your ears," when shooting Live Photos, Mann said. "Think about the sound, not just the visual. Cowbells, running water, urban traffic, laughing, etc. Sound makes Live Photos way better, and it's fun to think creatively what sound you are capturing."

"Low light has been the greatest challenge for pros looking to work on their iPhones as their primary camera, but I think we're not far off from seeing that change," Mann said about his iPhone 6s low-light photo tests. "Whether it's the DxO One or not, the dSLR's last stronghold is quickly fading."

A video showing the stunning imagery captured with help of iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus follows below, with the full review complete with additional clips and plenty of camera samples available at the link down in our source section.
