Mobile Photography & Art Challenge – One Day Odyssey

We are launching a new Challenge today that is relevant to all genres of mobile photography and art. This is a Challenge like no other!  It is for one complete day, at least seven hours and we want you to submit a minimum of ten and no more than fifteen images. The idea of this project is that you take yourself on an journey and spend all day taking mobile photographs and/or creating mobile art.

We want you to dedicate a whole day to photography and art because you deserve it.  So, please mark a day on your calendar and spend that day taking and creating mobile images.

We don't mind what type of photography you do, you may prefer to walk off into luscious landscape, if you do, perhaps you will want to arrive at sunrise and walk all day until sunset.

You may prefer to have a day taking portraiture images, this could be a prearranged shoot, or you may prefer to take some group portraiture in the streets.

You could go all out and settle on street photography, perhaps try and visit as many towns as you can in one day to photograph.

Whilst on this odyssey, consider collecting some non photographic items/momentos from your trip and including these in the images you create, such as a bus/tube/subway ticket.

    This Odyssey will run from 30th May 2017 – 30th June 2017

    Guidelines

    – This must be a dedicated photographic odyssey

    – The odyssey should be all day (minimum seven hours)

    – You must submit a minimum of ten images and a maximum of fifteen

    – You must list the apps and device you have used to create these images

    – A short description of your day, would be advantageous

    – Submit your images via WeTransfer to Joanne@theappwhisperer.com

    – Each odyssey (meeting this criteria) will be featured on TheAppWhisperer.com in our Lightbox format

    – This Odyssey will run from 30th May 2017 – 30th June 2017

How To Be Better At Mobile Photography | A Sample Workflow & Breakdown

Did you know your phone has more technology in it than the Space Station? Ok, I didn't even try to verify that but they are amazing – like, seriously amazing. We've reached a point in mobile photography where, at least for mobile viewing purposes, you can have imagery that stands up to the top-of-the-line cameras. The same things apply to shooting and editing photos on any platform: the more experience, knowledge of light, and practice you have the better your images will be to start with. Here are some very general editing 'do's' and 'don'ts' that can step up your mobile photography game at any stage.

    #🏖

A post shared by Ryan Longnecker (@ryanlongnecker) on May 8, 2017 at 8:59am PDT

I want to give you a little heads up about me and mobile editing: I'm obsessive, but I also love it. It's therapeutic and I find myself editing for fun on car and plane rides. Not everyone will love it, and for those people, your patience might run too thin too quickly and your mobile photography game might always feel a little weak. It should be stressed that for most people mobile photography is a hobby, even for professional photographers, shooting with our phones is something we do when we aren't working (and sometimes when we are).

Here we'll go through an editing progression going over a few of my favorite apps, my workflow, and some quick things you can do or avoid doing to get those likes, err… I mean artistic gratification.

[RELATED: CORTEX CAMERA APP REVIEW | ONE OF THE BEST PHOTOGRAPHY APPS, PERIOD]

    First: Shooting Apps

First, normal level – standard camera app on your phone. Second, nerd level, ProCam. If I remember to switch over or have time I'll use ProCam because I can manually adjust focus and exposure and lock it. The main reason though, is it allows my iPhone to shoot in RAW, or more accurately, DNG. I'm not sure what phones have that option now but I know both the iPhone7 and iPhone7+ have the option. Shooting RAW on your phone will allow the most room for editing, but will also need the most room on your phone so you'll need something bigger than 32GB if your plan is to make shooting and editing RAW on your phone a regular thing.

There is plenty to be said elsewhere about how to shoot with your phone or how to take good photos in general, so we won't address thst precisely. One thing I've noticed, though, is that if you do mix up DSLR images and phone images you're going to need to put in a little work to make sure the phone images aren't a huge eyesore on your feed, assuming eyesores are something you'd want to avoid.

One more thing is for people who tend to post mostly or all phone shots: try to maintain similar kinds of exposure to further brand your feed with consistency. I feel like a neutrally balanced exposure tends to feel very boring and I believe it is because when you just take a shot that has been automatically focused and metered it's no different than the bajillion images taken by anyone else on their phones; it's the automatic feature and gets lost in the feed of images that have no aesthetic intentionality. I tend to either slightly over-expose or under-expose in both my professional and mobile photography, and that's on purpose.

    Second: Lightroom Mobile App

This is where I edit my DNG files. It's a very robust app but probably a lot more than most people will want to do as you can do nearly everything that the computer software can.

This is where I do basic light adjustments, and you can very easily adjust curves, which is huge for a consistent look. It also allows me to add the same subtle split toning I tend to add in all of my photography, and about the only place where I could find to adjust my blue to be the teal that my eye loves so much. The Lightroom Mobile app is a good starting point to get the image either finished or ready for some more stylized toning.

    Second – Part B

If you don't want to go down that road I suggest Snapseed. Snapseed is a fantastic and very intuitive app and has adjustment brushes as well as great image sharpening. There are a lot of other effects in this app and it has some really good black & white options as well. If I don't want or need to take an image through Lightroom I'll go through Snapseed. If I feel I want to just add a little sharpening to an image (usually when I'm bored on car rides and have a lot of extra time) I'll still just use Snapseed for sharpening alone.

    Third: Effects

It may sound stupid but, I have a few apps that I use for one effect only. Photo Wizard for radial blur, ReTouch for clone stamping, LensDistortions for flare and light leaks, and Filterstorm for layering and masking (super intense app otherwise). These are all to taste and I use them sparingly, but I don't ever leave them for the last line of my workflow because if they aren't a part of the image when it gets the final coat of paint it will look very obviously placed on top of a finished image. Sometimes I'll even add these effects first if I know there's one I want.

One thing I'd suggest is that if you want your images to be cleaner and easier to look at(and 'like') do some cleaning up with a clone stamp tool, whether you use one in another app or ReTouch. Ben Sasso has a great tip about squinting your eyes at your image and see what pops out as distracting. It's a great way to see what you might want to edit out of a shot that doesn't need to be there.

Fourth: Final Toning With VSCO Cam

I'm sure none of you have heard of VSCO Cam… oh wait, you ALL have heard of VSCO Cam? Well, it's used a lot, and it's really impressive and can be a great tool. Even though it's dropping some scratch, I'd suggest buying the filters in their bundle package and seeing what kind of style you like, there are lots of options. My main jams are C8, A6, J2, M5 (lots of people's go-to), and B4 for black and white. I own all except for the most recent ones, and I literally only ever use those ones. Once I've done everything else and bring it into VSCO, though, I don't want to crush all of the colors or over stylize it so I tend to bring the filter slider down to somewhere between 6-10. Just adds a little consistent blending over the whole thing.

    Instagram

Finally. Only using Instagram filters, or over-using them is… well… awful. Opinions are whatever, but I hate them and they are mostly made fun of. All of that being said, there are very rare times I'll use a filter on top and bring the slider down just to try it out. Mostly, once I'm posting, if something has changed in my mind about light or saturation I can make a final adjustment before posting.

Check out the video below for a sped-up sample edit.

Mobile Photography and Art – A Picture’s Worth with Cristina Rossi

'A Picture's Worth'… is where we ask mobile photographers that have created powerful mobile photography/art to explain the processes they took. This includes their initial thoughts as to what they wanted to create, why they wanted to create it, how they created it, including all apps used and what they wanted to convey. We also ask these incredible artists to explain their emotions and how the image projects those feelings. We have published a few A Picture's Worth articles recently, if you have missed those – please go here.

In this A Picture's Worth today we asked Cristina Rossi to tell us more about her image, it is one that we have previously featured in our weekly mobile photography and art showcase. Rossi has detailed her thoughts below, we think you'll find this invaluable…

"Put on your red shoes and dance the blues" is a line from David Bowie "Let's dance". David Bowie was my first teenage crush, so the lyrics of that song are forever imprinted in my mind. Red is my signature colour, a person I loved used to call me Scarlet Woman, Poppy and things like that. He also taught me the basics of editing, but things went horribly wrong and that's also why I don't edit much, it reminds me of him. The ropes represent a bad situation that you can't escape.

I explained the idea to my friend Angelo and he took the picture with my iPhone: he often acts as human tripod for me, but I wasn't happy with the photos. The pictures rested in my camera roll for a while, then I tried to edit one without much convinction. I used Snapseed to create a vignette and enhance the red, then Pic Grunger to add some texture. As always, when I put a lot of effort into things nobody likes them, but when I do it without thinking too much about it people loves it, and here we are".

"I'm really not a "selfie" photographer, either in taking them or ever showing them to anyone as originally shot! But I wanted to try the BeautyCam app, and my no-makeup face was a good place to start. It's a fun app, with so many different looks and colours, and I was able to use a few of the resulting images to take on to my favorite app for more work–-icolorama.

I use icolorama for 95% of my mobile editing—-From what I call the basic straight editing of my flowers, to the multi-image blending of images using cloning and masking tools.

In this self-portrait, I blended several images together, using various blending modes (multiply, screen, darken, etc), and masking out certain parts of images that I didn't want to see. I also use "distort" a lot in icolorama, using an image of itself to rotate slightly to create additional lines and movement, distortion. I wanted a feeling of lightness and color to show through this image, with movement, a feeling of fun that summer always brings. And also I see some lack leather around her shoulders, and am pretty sure she's going to be riding a motorcycle down the California coast Highway!!!"

    9 Ways to Learn Photography

    Cover photo by Igor Stevanovic

Want to learn how to take better photos, but don't know where to start? Or maybe you feel like you have some basic photography skills, but don't know what new technique to try next? Whether you are learning your way around a DSLR for the first time, or whether you want to expand your repertoire, there's something out there for you.

Read on for 9 great ways to learn photography.

    1. Take an online class.

Curious to try out a new style of photography? Or maybe you just want to learn from a photographer you look up to? There are countless courses available online on every topic imaginable.

The best part is that for many, you can take the class at any time from the comfort of your own home. Many also come with videos or content that you can review and refer back to as much as you want.

Two great resources with a wide selection of classes are Creative Live and Lynda.com.

There are also plenty of great free online courses. Check out Strobist for tons of info on the (sometimes intimidating) topic of lighting. Start with Lighting 101 to learn the basics, then move onto more complex techniques.

Marc Levoy's Lectures on Digital Photography are also worth checking out. This Stanford professor has both lecture videos and written content on learning photography available on his website. There is no previous knowledge of photography required, so it's a great starting point.

    2. Take a workshop in real life.

Online is great, but nothing beats watching someone show you a technique in person.

How to find a workshop? Look up photographers you admire, and check their websites to see if they have any upcoming events. Many photographers offer photography courses and workshops of their own, or they may be participating in larger events.

Some of the best experiences come from references. Ask photographer friends about workshops they've taken—chances are, they'll have something to recommend for you (or tell you what they would avoid).

Other great places to look are local photography clubs, arts organizations, and museums. And of course, schools—check out universities, colleges, and community colleges near you. If you don't want to or can't commit to pursuing a full program or degree, that's not necessarily an issue—many offer continuing education classes as well.

Itching to go somewhere new? Consider planning your upcoming vacation time around a workshop experience. Popular workshops include Summit workshops, Maine Media Photography Workshops, and Santa Fe Photographic Workshops.

Or wait for the workshop to come to you! Scott Kelby has touring workshops on topics like how to make the most of Lightroom.

So—how to pick from all the options? Think not only about the specific skills you want to improve, but the style of workshop you're looking for. How much hands-on time do you want? Do you want to commit to a recurring course, or just a one-time session? What are you looking to get out of it? Testimonials and reviews (check for ones on outside sources!) can give you a pretty good idea of what to expect.

    3. Listen to a new podcast.

It might seem weird to be learning about photography from a medium that has no images, but there are some great photography podcasts you shouldn't miss out on.

Some 500px staff favorites worth checking out include On Taking Pictures, This Week in Photo, and The Candid Frame. It's a good way to get a regular dose of photography.

    4. Read photography blogs and news regularly.

We know you love 500px ISO ( 🙂 ), but we also want to give a shoutout to all the other great photography blogs and websites out there. Bookmark blogs to check on the daily for new pieces on photography, whether it's news, stories, or photography tutorials.

Here's just a sample of what's out there:

  • Petapixel has articles on everything from photography in the news to tutorials you should check out.
  • Looking for gear reviews? Digital Photography Review has a ton—and more are added all the time.
  • FStoppers. See what's new, or search for articles by category—there's stuff on everything from food photography to portraits.

  • 5. Join a Reddit conversation.

Not sure what you want to read about—but know you want to chime in on the conversation when it gets interesting?

Check out Reddit's photography section to browse questions from people all over the world. You're guaranteed to learn about something you may not have even thought to look for before.

    6. Check out YouTube videos.

YouTube can be fantastic if you have a specific question you want answered instantly—especially when it comes to something like Photoshop, where a visual walk-through really helps. It's also a great way to discover tips, tricks, and techniques you may not have even considered searching for.

Here are a few channels to check out:

  • PHLEARN will help you master Photoshop and Lightroom, whether you want to get started with the basics or focus in on something super specific.
  • Serge Ramelli also shares tips on Lightroom and Photoshop.
  • Thomas Heaton teaches landscape photography tips and tricks—and has tons of on-location videos.
  • B&H Photo (a camera store) walks you through photography gear but also features videos on different photography techniques as well as insights from pros.
  • 7. Join a local photography group/meetup.

Learning from other photographers is great—but how do you find the other photographers?

Join a local photo club or group, check out Meetup for photography related stuff in your area, look up local organizations, or ask a friend in photography for their recommendations. Apple is now also holding photo walks if you want to play around with mobile photography. Or, if you can't find what you're looking for, start your own group—you're not the only one looking for people to take photos with.

Photography groups are also good ways to practice giving and getting critiques. Read this article for a primer on critiquing.

    8. Look at lots and lots of photography.

It's hard to know what you want to learn if you don't know what you want to learn in the first place. There's tons of websites and apps for viewing photos, but don't limit yourself to your computer screen or smartphone.

Visit museums (keep an eye out for discounts—some have free or discounted admission on particular days). Pop into galleries and exhibitions if you run into them. Browse through books to discover the kinds of photography you want to learn how to do (check out these recommended titles). There's no shortage of places to get inspired.

    9. Learn by doing.

The best way to get better at photography is the same as for most other things—practice. Get out there and start taking photos. Don't like what you see? That's ok—just try again. After all, there's always more to be learning. What are your best tips for learning photography? Share them in the comments below!

20+ Simple Mobile Photography Tips to Take Better Photographs

Smartphone camera has taken the photography to a new level. The smartphone camera is handy and you can take pictures anytime anywhere as per your wish. Now, smartphones are smart enough to capture perfect photographs and that too in a high-quality. Smartphone help those people who want to do photography but not in a mood of carrying the DSLR everywhere or don't want to buy a DSLR. Anyone can click the image but capture the perfect photographs in a perfect moment needs skills. You need mobile photography tips to make improve

If you need mobile photography tips to make improve your smartphone photography then you are at the very right page. Most of the time I clicked photos with my mobile phone. Many friends and admirers asked me about how I click these creative photographs with the smartphone. They always ask for mobile photography tips.  Here, I will explain to you how to click a good photograph from mobile and also give you some simple but important photography tips to take better photographs.

    1. Creative Mind:

Photography is an art. Every photographer has a different perspective of seeing the same subject. So, creativity is a must have thing if you want to do photography. Anyone can click a photograph but making that photograph one of a kind needs a creative mind.

For example, I have taken the below photograph on a rainy day. I was crossing the road via footbridge and I saw running vehicles through the glass wall of the footbridge. Within a second I pulled out my smartphone and captured this image.

I captured this photograph on a rainy day.

    2. Know Your Camera:

It is very necessary to know your camera. This will help you to take photograph in every situation. If you have knowledge about every feature of your smartphone camera, you can adjust the white balance, ISO or can use inbuilt filters as per your need.

    3. Three basics of Photography:

Many people thought that the "basics of photography" is a DSLR thing. But nowadays, many smartphones give you right to use these basics. There are three things that you need to learn. These are the basics to understand photography:

  • Shutter Speed
  • Aperture
  • ISO
  • Use manual mode of the smartphone camera. By using manual mode you can adjust these three components of photography. Shutter Speed is the time duration that the lens shutter is open. The longer it stays open, the more light is able to get to the sensor. The larger the Aperture, the more light gets in the lens. Also, the size of the aperture controls how much of the image appears to be in focus behind and in front of what you're focused on. ISO measures the sensitivity of the image sensor to available light. Higher the ISO number, the higher sensitive it is to the light.

For example, in the below photograph the background and the object both are white. When I clicked this image, I managed all the three components so that all objects in the photograph appeared clearly.

I captured this photograph during my workshop with Canon India.

    4. Keep still for an Extra Second

Don't move your smartphone just after taking the photo. Keep it still for extra 1 or 2 seconds. This will help in capturing a clear image. Many times smartphone takes time to capture a high-quality image. So if you move mobile, hazy image may be captured.

Also, take your time before the click and check all the possible shots, compositions, and angles that can make the photograph better.

    5. Rule of thirds:

Keeping focus objects at the center is a little bit boring now. The rule of thirds says that divide the screen in 3 by 3 and keep focus object on the side. This will give you interesting photographs. Also, space on the images gives extra creativity in images. Check the below image for example.

    6. Get close to Camera:

Macro photography is the new photography trend. Taking the pictures of tiny or small objects or things is known as macro photography. Avoid zoom as it can reduce the image quality. Try to capture the close image of objects.

    7. Ditch the Flash:

Sometimes flash destroy the good images. Avoid using flash when you are capturing photographs of reflecting objects and shadows. Also, when you are taking close pictures of any object, avoid flash.

For example, the below image would have been more clear if I didn't use the flash.

    8. Avoid Digital Zoom:

Avoid digital zoom in smartphone photography as it can reduce the image quality. Better to get close to the objects or click without zooming. The image would be noisy if you Digital zoom the image and it results in bad pictures.

    9. Clean lens regularly:

The dust particles or greasy surface can create noise on your photographs. Therefore, regularly clean the smartphone camera lens. This will help you in capturing clean and noise free images. This is the must follow mobile photography tips.

    10. Light your subject:

Manage light on your subject is the basic and important in photography. Light plays important role in photography. Always try to manage the light on your subject. There is no hard and fast rule about how you manage the light on your subjects. Try to create different source and different focus positions to capture beautiful images.

    11. Do experiment with White Balance:

You might have noticed the images sometimes it have yellowish or pinkish or orangish effect. To remove this you need white balance. Most of the smartphone cameras come with the option to manually set or adjust white balance. Sometimes, increasing or decreasing the whiteness in pictures gives some extra effect on it.

    12. Use the Highest Resolution:

Many times, by default the smartphone camera is set on a medium resolution. Go to setting and set the resolution on highest available. High-resolution images are better and more clear. The take extra memory in SD card but it is worth it if you love photography.

    13. Shoot during Magic Hours:

Magic hours are sunrise and sunset time. During magic hours, the golden horizon light gives extra effects to the photos. You can creative many creative images during those hours. The magic hours' natural light is perfect for photography.

I captured the below image before the sunrise at the Mount Abu Hill Station. The golden light gave an extra effect to the photograph.

I took this photograph in the morning, before sunrise.

    14. Use HDR:

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range in the photography field. It is now available on almost every smartphone. With HDR on, you can capture the better photograph. But it completely depends on how and when you are using it. Sometimes, HDR effect can produce the high-quality image but sometimes results are worse.

If you want to learn about HDR photography, click here: What is HDR in camera and when should you use it while capturing photos?

    15. Play with Shutter Speed:

Sometimes, increasing or decreasing the shutter speed may give you best photographs. Many photographers do the experiment with moving light and shutter speed. You can control the shutter speed manually in the manual mode of your smartphone camera. Trust me, this is the best smartphone photography tip to play with light effect or moving train effect.

    16. Do experiments:

There are no rules in photography once you learn the basics. Do whatever you want, do experiment with rules, or do anything creative with your subject. The below photograph is clicked by me during my visit to Tajmahal. You have been seen many photographs of Tajmahal but the view of the photographer can enhance that look.

    17. Color Vs Black & White:

If you always click the color photographs, my suggestion is to do some black and white photography too. Colors are an important part of life but black & white photography gives beautiful effects on photographs. Clicking color photographs and then convert it into black & white may not give that many good photographs. Capture black & white photographs directly. That will give you the new idea to improve the look in the photograph.

    18. Frames:

Frames give extra creativity to the photographs. Framing is the technique which draws the attention to the specific subject in the image. It blocks other parts of the image with something in the scene. The frame can be made by anything like a window or leaves or mirror or anything. The below image is taken by me and is the perfect example in this mobile photography tips. I used metro reflection mirror as a frame to capture entire metro station.

    19. Reflection and Shadows:

Photographing reflections and shadows can produce stunning results. but achieving or clicking those dramatic shots can be harder than first thought. You have to be creative and quick because sometimes that effects may not there for a long time. Also, you have to keep in mind the basics of photography while clicking the reflection or mirror image.

    20. Use Mobile Lens Accessories

If you love to click microphotograph and macro photograph from your smartphone, try to use smartphone camera lens accessories. By using mobile camera accessories you can capture good photographs.

Mobile Photography – Saturday Poetry – ‘The Answer’ by Sara Teasdale with @blurrybirdy

This weeks Saturday Poetry, matched with mobile photography/art is entitled 'The Answer' by Sara Teasdale. "Sara Teasdale received public admiration for her well-crafted lyrical poetry which centered on a woman's changing perspectives on beauty, love, and death. Many of Teasdale's poems chart developments in her own life, from her experiences as a sheltered young woman in St. Louis, to those as a successful yet increasingly uneasy writer in New York City, to a depressed and disillusioned person who would commit suicide in 1933. Although many later critics would not consider Teasdale a major poet, she was popular in her lifetime with both the public and critics. She won the first Columbia Poetry Prize in 1918, a prize that would later be renamed the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry".

    'The Answer' by Sara Teasdale

When I go back to earth

    And all my joyous body

Puts off the red and white

That once had been so proud,

    If men should pass above

    With false and feeble pity,

My dust will find a voice

    To answer them aloud:

    "Be still, I am content,

    Take back your poor compassion—

Joy was a flame in me

    Too steady to destroy.

    Lithe as a bending reed

Loving the storm that sways her—

I found more joy in sorrow

Than you could find in joy."
